50.2139 Analyze The Different War Aims Of The Belligerents In World War One.
The war aims of the belligerents in World War One are diverse and complex. This paper will consider them according to the following tripartite categorization: political, economic, and security issues. It will be shown that although the different belligerents may have differed in the emphasis each one placed on the different categories, they all shared essentially the same aims in the war: expression of nationalistic pride, the protection of national commerce, and the security of their nations against the belligerence of other states. 7 pgs. 4 f/c. 4b.

51.2322 The Effects of American Policies on Early Canadian Economic Development.
This paper will look at the dynamics and influence of American policies and objectives on Canadian economic development. By virtue of their importance and prominence in the history of US-Canada relations, the primary focus will be on the War of 1812 and the Reciprocity Treaty of 1854. While it might be argued that the 1854 Treaty just falls shy of 'early' economic history in Canada, the importance of the Treaty marks a milestone in north-south relations that is so important that it warrants the flexible use of the word 'early'. In any case, the motivations for the Treaty were manifest before 1854 and though it was not an inevitable outcome, it is in no way accurate to include the 1854 Treaty in a paper on early economic history. 16 pgs. 11 f/c. 14b.

52.2714 African Politics As An Impediment To Effective Economic Development Strategy.
This paper will first analyze how much of Africa's stunted growth can be linked to the west, and then how much of it can be linked to African policies and politics themselves. This analysis will show that it is probably impractical to try to separate the two. Following this, the paper will look at two case studies, Nigeria and South Africa, as examples of how politics and external influence can affect economic growth. In the final analysis, it is clear that the state of African economic development is a product of the North/South divide at large. This is not to say that African politics or policies are in any way equal or superior to those of developed economies; but rather that a broad focus must be taken when looking at politico-economic development in Africa or in the third world at large. 25 pgs. 32 f/c. 16b.
